About Me
Hello and welcome to my academic website! My name is Matthew Strathearn and I am PhD Candidate at Carleton University located in Ottawa, Canada.
I am in the final stage of completing my PhD and will be on the 2020/2021 job market. My research interest include: theoretical industrial organization and competition policy, and applied spatial econometrics. I have considerable experience working on both theoretical and empirical research. My ideal career would be a field that will draw on my extensive programing experience (R, Python, and VBA) and would allow me to pursue my passion for economic research.
I am originally an Ottawa native and completed both my BA (2012) and MA (2013) in Economics here at Carleton University. My industry career began in 2010 where I worked as a coop student for the Audit and Evaluation Branch at the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. I held this position part-time for the remainder of my undergraduate education. In the summer of 2015, I moved to Agriculture and Agri-food Canada where I worked as a Visual Basic Programmer. In the fall of 2015 I began my career as a Regulatory Specialist at Bell Canada, one of Canada's largest telecommunications providers. In 2016, I made the decision to return to Carleton to complete my PhD. During my PhD I held various research positions at the Bank of Canada, the Competition Bureau of Canada, and Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada.
